Program
A palliative care hospice server provider, who previously had delivered their
services in other’s facilities, desired a purpose-built facility of
their own to house 19 residents and supportive settings for families of their
clients. A truly residential setting was desired.
Site
An existing small school, set in a wooded lot in a residential neighborhood
was to be remodeled.
Solution
A great room was created out of the schools largest gathering space, including
dining, living, and residential kitchen areas, focused on an intimate fireplace.
Rather than creating a “nurse station,” staff work spaces were
created as an adjunct to the residential kitchen, normalizing the functions
of staff work and integrating them in an unobtrusive manner. Therapy, massage
and quiet/meditative spaces were included. Resident rooms were designed as
suites, each with French doors (allowing beds to be moved outdoors) opening
to a private patio looking into the woods, bathrooms and a family living
room accommodating 11th-hour family overnight stays.
